| Supercharger | | This is basically a sophisticated air compressor, bolted to the front of the engine. As the engine runs, it turns the compressor wheel, which pressurizes air reaching the carburetor. The more airflow, the more power. Superchargers usually are seen as large chrome or aluminum chambers on the top of the engine, often with a large scoop sticking through the hood - if, indeed, there is a hood. They make an interesting whining sound as they run at low speed or idle, but when the driver floors the accelerator, all you hear is the roar of the car speeding away. Supercharged engines are most at home on the drag strip, but many hot rodders add them, sometimes as much for appearance as for raw performance. Not very fuel efficient.
